Falklands 40: Anniversary Photo Competition

By J Brock (FINN)

To mark the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands in 2022, an Anniversary Photo Competition has been launched.  Throughout the year the event’s organisers will hold a number of events in the Falkland Islands and the UK, to commemorate the sacrifices made in 1982, and to celebrate the progress made in the Islands over the past 40 years.

The competition’s organisers are calling this special commemorative year “Looking Forward at Forty” – making it a time to reflect on the achievements that have been made with our hard-won freedom, and to look forward to the next 40 years of life in the Falkland Islands.

To help mark the occasion, the 40th Anniversary Committee is now looking for local photographers to submit images to feature in an outdoor exhibition, which will be displayed along Ross Road in the style of our highly successful ‘Essence of our Community’ displays.

Organisers would like to see photographs which help to tell the story of the Falkland Islands in a captivating and compelling way, and truly showcase what makes our home and the people who live here so special.

There are eight categories to help spark your creativity:

Our Community

Our Environment

Our Future

Our Heritage

Our Progress

Our Self-Determination

Our Uniqueness

Our Resilience

Organisers are looking for submissions from people of all backgrounds, ages and interests. You do not need to be an expert in photography, we also welcome entries from talented amateur shutterbugs and budding enthusiasts!

The competition opens on 1 October 2021 and closes on 1 November 2021. Full details of how to enter, as well as our terms and conditions, are available on our website by visiting www.fig.gov.fk/policy/40th-anniversary-photo-competition

All winners will receive a framed copy of their winning image and will have their work featured in the outdoor exhibition; images will also be used to showcase the 40th Anniversary of the Falkland Islands Government website, social media, potentially a stamp issue and on promotional materials.

Judges are particularly looking for images and perspectives that have not been seen before, so entries which clearly demonstrate creativity and originality are especially welcomed. Good luck and ‘give it your best shot’!
