Tristan topics raised at All-Party Parliamentary Group

Report and photos from Tristan Government UK Representative Chris Carnegy

Key current topics for Tristan da Cunha were highlighted as MPs and members of the House of Lords gathered on Wednesday 2nd March 2022.

The occasion was the AGM of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Overseas Territories. It was the Group’s first face-to-face meeting since the start of the Covid pandemic.

I briefed members on the impressive take-up of vaccines on Tristan, and the return of cruise ships to the Tristan archipelago. I updated them on the project to eradicate invasive mice from Gough Island, and on plans for a Westminster celebration of Tristan’s vast new Marine Protection Zone. I stressed that the island is looking for ways to add resilience to its shipping links. And I noted that Tristan da Cunha – whose people were all welcomed to the UK as refugees 60 years ago – had seen the image of its gesture of solidarity with Ukraine go around the world via social media.
