Legislative Assembly Marks Margaret Thatcher Day

 

The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly is proud to mark Margaret Thatcher Day, honouring the late Prime Minister whose decisive leadership during the 1982 Falklands War continues to hold a place of deep gratitude within our community. To mark the occasion MLAs Birmingham, Roberts and Short laid flowers at the foot of the Margaret Thatcher bust on Ross Road.

 

Margaret Thatcher’s unwavering resolve and support for the liberation of the Falkland Islands following the Argentine invasion ensured that the principle of self-determination prevailed. Her actions reaffirmed the rights of the Falkland Islanders to determine their own political future and strengthened the enduring bonds between the Falkland Islands and the United Kingdom.

 

Reflecting on this day, Chair of the Legislative Assembly, MLA Leona Roberts, said:

 

“Margaret Thatcher Day is a poignant moment for us to remember and express our gratitude for Lady Thatcher’s courage and leadership during one of the most defining periods in our history. The liberation of the Falkland Islands in 1982 not only safeguarded our way of life but also reinforced the principles of democracy and self-determination that remain central to our identity today.”

 

Across the Islands, residents are encouraged to reflect on this history and the importance of the

preservation the hard-won freedoms that Lady Thatcher’s government helped secure.

 

As the Falkland Islands continue to look toward the future, the legacy of Margaret Thatcher serves as a reminder of the resilience of our community and the enduring values of self-determination which continue to require protection around the world even today.
