Half-mast Tribute for Ian Hansen

The Falklands have lost former MLA Mr Ian Hansen to ill health on Sunday, 16 February 2025 at his family home in Hill Cove, West Falkland.

“Ian committed many years of his life to serving our community. His love for the Falklands, and Camp in particular, was abundantly clear, whether he was representing the Islands internationally or at home. Members and staff at Gilbert House were deeply saddened to hear of Ian’s death and wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to all of his family and friends,” said Chair of the Legislative Assembly, MLA Leona Roberts.

 

From 1974–1980, Ian Hansen worked as a shepherd at Hill Cove before moving to work on Pebble Island as a stockman. He was a founding member of the Falkland Islands Farmers Association and was chairman of the Rural Business Association from 2000 until 2003.Office of the Legislative Assembly

 

An 8th generation Islander, Mr Hansen has always lived in the Camp. Mr Hansen owned the house at Hill Cove where he grew up and where his parents lived for over 60 years.

 

In 2003, Mr Hansen joined the Legislative Council as a member for Camp after winning a by-election to fill the seat left vacant by Philip Miller.  He lost his seat in the 2009 general election.  Hansen returned to the Legislative Assembly in 2011 after being the only candidate in a by-election to fill the seat vacated by Bill Luxton.  He won re-election in 2013 and 2017. Hansen resigned from the Legislative Assembly on 19 July 2023 due to health issues.

 

As a mark of respect for the late Mr Ian Hansen, the flag at the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly Office, Gilbert House will be flown at half-mast on the day of his funeral.
