FAPESP Program for the South Atlantic and Antarctica launches new call for proposals
PROASA’s second opportunity to promote research focuses on themes that still represent gaps in the methodological and infrastructure advances of ocean research; There will be two cycles, one in April and the other in August, for submission of proposals.
FAPESP announces the launch of the second call for proposals for the South Atlantic and Antarctic Program (PROASA). The program aims to contribute to the generation, diffusion and application of knowledge, through scientific, technological and innovative approaches, in two interconnected but still little-known planetary systems (South Atlantic and Antarctica).
In order to give interested researchers the proper time to prepare to articulate and submit proposals to FAPESP, the 2025 edition of the PROASA Call foresees two cycles throughout 2025, with deadlines for submission on April 30 and August 4.
The South Atlantic and Antarctica modulate processes that positively and negatively influence the potential for sustainable development of the state of São Paulo, Brazil and the world. PROASA therefore considers initiatives aimed at coastal and marine environments in the South Atlantic, under and beyond national jurisdiction, and for Antarctica, which is part of the Antarctic continent and the Southern Ocean (or Southern Ocean). Through the advancement of knowledge, PROASA aims to contribute to the national and international ocean agenda, including the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
This Call aims to support research on all topics related to ocean research, especially those that still represent challenges for the state of São Paulo and Brazil, notably the existing scientific gaps, which imply generating new knowledge in order to overcome methodological and infrastructure barriers.
Proposals focused on Antarctica will be considered only if they are not dependent on fieldwork (e.g., studies with samples already collected and based on modeling and theoretical approaches).
It is expected that the research projects will foster the training of highly qualified human resources – with undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students carrying out high-quality and high-impact research – and internationalization, involving (as far as possible and in coherence with the scope of the proposal) researchers from other countries. Partnerships with companies, public agencies and civil society organizations will be encouraged.
Successful candidates are also expected to actively participate in the PROASA network meetings and workshops that aim to strengthen the ocean and Antarctic scientific community in São Paulo and Brazil.
To promote the projects, FAPESP will make available three types of Research Awards: Thematic, Young Investigator and Regular. Researchers will be able to submit their proposals observing the limits of resources that each modality defines for the total budget of the proposal – R$ 7 million, R$ 2.5 million and R$ 600 thousand, respectively.
