New confirmed avian influenza (bird flu) cases

 

On 19 February 2025 swabs from two skuas found dead on Bleaker Island returned positive results for highly pathogenic avian influenza.

 

A level 1 response will be followed which means adhering to biosecurity guidance. This guidance can be found here: https://falklands.gov.fk/agriculture/avian-influenza

 

Testing was delayed due to a lack of reagent. The Declaration made in accordance with article 5(4) as read with article 6 of the Animal Health (Emergency Measures for Outbreaks of Infectious Diseases) Order 2022 will be reviewed on Friday 28^th February 2025.

 

The public are reminded to NOT TOUCH dead or sick birds but report them to the email birdflu@naturalresources.gov.fk or call the Veterinary Services on 27366 or 55366 out of hours.
