Update from the FIG Public Health Unit on the Mental Health Champions Training initiative:

The Champions Training is open to all and you don’t need to have attended the December information session to attend. All sessions are free to attend, and you do not need to pre-book. If you wish to dial in to the session, please let us know and we can arrange that for you.

When and Where:  22nd– 25th March at the Chamber of Commerce – please see the full schedule attached for details of when the options are, you need only to attend one session for each module.

A little about the trainers;

Jane and Darren are freelance associates, working with Changing Minds Globally and Implemental Worldwide CIC to provide training and consultancy support to the Lived Experience Leadership elements of various global mental health literacy and anti-stigma programmes. Starting out originally as Champions, both Jane and Darren moved into Regional Coordinator roles in the Time to Change England campaign and they bring a wealth of experience in anti-stigma campaigning, grounded in their own lived experience of mental ill-health. Alongside this work, Jane is a consultant and trainer in workplace mental health and wellbeing; Darren also works for a UK based learning disability/ autism focused NGO, in the role of Stakeholder/Community Engagement Manager.

What does it mean to be a Champion?

Champions are people with lived experience of mental health, who use their own experience to aim to change people’s attitudes and behaviours towards mental health. Working towards ending stigma and discrimination in their community through social contact events and awareness raising campaigns.

Champions are supported through the training to share their stories or parts of their stories safely. The level of disclosure is individual and you share only what you are comfortable to do so.

Social contact has been demonstrated to reduce negative attitudes, misconceptions and stereotyping about mental health.

As a Champion you are not expected to be an expert in all areas of mental health or to give advice, guidance or offer direct support to someone.

If you have lived experience you may want to come along to Module 1, 2 and 3 as well as the ‘audience with’ session.

What if I don’t have lived experience but want to get involved in the anti-stigma campaign?

There are other ways you can be involved… everyone has a role to play:

Someone I care for lives with a mental health condition

I am a business owner / leader / manager, looking to tackle stigma in the workplace

I am a community leader (e.g. sports team coach)

I want to share information about the campaign through online networks

Module 1 and the ‘audience with’ session are recommended.

If you have any queries please do get in touch with us. We are happy to assist with any questions.
