Editor’s note: The 41% Tariff imposed on the Falkland Islands constitutes recognition that they are not part of Argentina, let alone Tierra Del Fuego. Our trade with the US is microscopic and I do not understand how the Falklands could have ripped off the US.
It is understood that one of our fisheries companies sold Patagonian Toothfish to a company in the US and that both agreed on the tariff. It is also noteworthy that we were named as the Falkland Islands and the “M” Word was not associated with it.
Nonetheless, I think it is appropriate that the US recognises the Falklands IAW Article 1.2 of the UN Charter on the 43rd anniversary of the Argentine invasion. What happened is valuable and cost-effective, in that we haven’t lost out on any significant trade deal in exchange for the US recognising our right to self-determination.
