Richard Ullger to advise OTs on policing for UK Government after stint as COP in Falklands

Recently retired Police Commissioner Richard Ullger is to take up a new role as a consultant on the Overseas Territories, following a formal approach from the UK Government.

Although he will be based on the Rock, he told GBC that Gibraltar will not fall within his remit.

First though, he’s in the Falkland Islands on a short stint as Chief of Police.

Richard Ullger is tasked with providing policing advice on a wide range of issues across several regions.

He will act as an advisor to police forces in various Caribbean islands, the Sovereign Base Areas of Cyprus and in British territories in the South Atlantic. He will travel to these locations as and when needed to carry out inspections and provide face-to-face guidance to officers on the ground. Mr Ullger will then report back to senior officials in London.

However, before taking up the role, and following a separate approach, Mr Ullger is currently deployed to the Falkland Islands to act as temporary Chief of Police.

Earlier this week, the former Commissioner shared a photo on social media of a Royal Air Force boarding pass for a flight to the Ascension Island, with the caption: “A new chapter begins.”

Mr Ullger has made no secret of the difficulties he faced during his stint as RGP Commissioner under the shadow of the McGrail Inquiry. He left New Mole House last month after a 37-year-career, telling staff that he looked forward to exciting challenges ahead.

.

GBC has reached out to Mr Ullger, who said he still felt he had much to offer and was delighted to receive these two approaches. He said he was looking forward to his time in the Falklands and the new consultancy role on the OTs.

We asked him whether he expected policing in Gibraltar to fall within his scope of his work, particularly in light of the potential challenges a future Treaty could present. However, he dismissed this saying: “That it would be totally unfair on the new Commissioner of Police Owain Richards to provide any consultation here and for that reason his scope of work would not include the Rock”.
