SA Agulhas II to set sail without helicopters for first time in 40 years

When the SA Agulhas II sets sail on its annual trip to Antarctica in a few weeks’ time, it will do so without helicopters for the first time in more than 40 years.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment confirmed this week the mission to resupply the Sanae IV research base in Antarctica for the next 12 months would not carry any helicopters.
The decision follows months of uncertainty among those concerned about the renewal of the contract for helicopter search and rescue and support services – not only for the mission to Antarctica, but also to Gough and Marion islands in March next year. The three missions take place at different times of the year.
