Update on phased programme of construction works for Tussac House
The Falklands Islands Government would like to update the public on the development of Tussac House, the new assisted living facility on Ross Road East, near to the Narrows.
Work on the initial groundworks was completed in May 2021 and, since then, the project has progressed through the detailed design stage. A multi-disciplinary team including specialist designers led by ONE Creative Environments (ONE), has been working closely with user representatives from the Health and Social Services Directorate, to finalise all facets of the design.
Since early December 2021, teams have been working on the foundations of the new building. The construction of the building has been divided into five phases – the first phase is the western wing of the facility which will be called Shearwater; the second is the development of the centre or core of the building; the third and fourth phases are the construction of the eastern and northern wings, respectively named Siskin and Meadowlark. The fifth and final phase of the project will include landscaping the roadways and parking within the development. The building work on phase one is planned to start in April 2022, and the building is scheduled to be complete by early 2024.
MLA John Birmingham, Portfolio Lead for Health, said: “Tussac House is intended to be multi-use facility for the whole community. Firstly, it will provide a purpose-built home for people who require extra support to live their best possible life. Secondly, it will provide communal spaces for services and socialising, which will be available for not only residents, but also for staff and visitors to enjoy. I know it has taken some time to get to this point – which was not unexpected, given that it is the first undertaking of this specific scale and scope within the Falkland Islands – but I do hope that, as people see the building start to take shape, they will see why we have high hopes for this facility, and for the positive benefits that it will bring for our people.
