HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon ceremony –
Thursday, 2nd June 2022, 8:45pm at the seafront, Jamestown. There is a long and unbroken tradition in the United Kingdom of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons.
Such beacons were lit in a number of different locations and included on top of mountains, church and cathedral towers, castle battlements, town and village greens, and beaches and clifftops.
St Helena has also celebrated Royal events by lighting a beacon, the last being The Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. On 2nd June 2022, we will celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th year on the Throne and Platinum Jubilee. To mark this unique and historical moment of the first reigning Monarch to ever reach this milestone, a ‘Platinum Jubilee’ beacon will be lit on the sea front in Jamestown. All are warmly invited to attend this event. The event will be opened by Right Reverend Lord Bishop of St Helena, Dale Bowers MBE, and will include short speeches by His Excellency The Governor, Dr Philip Rushbrook, the Chief Minister, the Scouts and Girl Guides.
As the beacon is being lit at 9:15pm, a choir will sing the winning song of the Commonwealth competition dedicated to Her Majesty entitled ‘A Life Lived with Grace’. This song can be heard at: https://www.commonwealthresounds.com/qpjb/
On the same evening, more than 1,500 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, and in each of the capital cities of the Commonwealth Countries in recognition of The Queen’s long and selfless service. The beacons will enable local communities, individuals, and organisations to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen as part of the official Jubilee bank holiday weekend.
