Falkland Islands celebrate the coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen
Today, Saturday 6 May, marks the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla.
Representatives from the Falkland Islands were able to be part of the Coronation celebrations in London, with Members of the Falkland Islands Defence Force proudly marching and parading alongside other Overseas Territories, Commonwealth, and UK defence forces. On behalf of the Royal Falkland Islands Police, DC Helen Taylor was involved in the Coronation alongside representatives from the police forces of the other Overseas Territories.
MLA Teslyn Barkman and Her Excellency The Governor, Alison Blake CMG were honoured to be able to represent the Falkland Islands at the Coronation Service in Westminster Abbey as well as the Kings Reception at Buckingham Palace and the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle. The Falkland Islands Representative, Richard Hyslop will represent the Islands at a Coronation Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
As a British Overseas Territory, the Islands have been celebrating this historic day, with events that reach across our community, organised and managed by the team at the Historic Dockyard Museum. The community have been able to watch the Coronation, live on TV, absorbing the excitement and patriotism from 8,000 miles away, as well as celebrating with traditional tea parties and events for the younger members of our community. Islanders look forward to a further two days of celebrations in line with His Majesty’s wishes.
Chair of the Legislative Assembly, MLA Gavin Short said: “The Elected Members and I extend our heartiest congratulations to His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla on this historic day. This event will, for many, be the first time that they have seen the longstanding traditions and pageantry that comes with a Coronation, but within the traditions His Majesty also looked towards the future.”
