FALKLAND ISLANDS GOVERNMENT
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
03 January 2025
Ferry and Coastal Shipping Contract
The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) is pleased to announce that Executive Council has approved officers to begin negotiations with Workboat Services Limited (WSL) to ensure the continuation of Ferry and Coastal Shipping services beyond the current contract period.
The existing contract is set to expire at the end of March 2026, with provisions for up to two additional extensions by mutual agreement.
WSL has successfully managed the Ferry and Coastal Shipping services contract for the past 17 years and remains a trusted and valued partner in the delivery of these essential services.
Executive Council was provided with feedback from the extensive public consultations leading up to the submission of the paper. These have been factored into the negotiations with WSL. Once those discussions have been concluded, a detailed proposal will be presented to Executive Council for approval of a new contract.
Deputy Director of DCS and contract manager for the Ferry and Coastal Shipping service, Steve Dent said: “WSL is well placed within the Falkland Islands to continue to provide Ferry and Coastal Shipping services into the next decade. I am pleased to be able to continue working with the team to provide this essential service. I have every confidence that WSL and FIG will be able to negotiate a solution, beyond the current contract, that meets the expectations of our rural community. The Ferry and Coastal Shipping service is an essential lifeline for Camp residents, and a key part of continuing to develop tourism. I look forward to working with the community to ensure that we meet future service needs.”
Adam Cockwell, Managing Director of Workboat Services Limited said: “We look forward to continuing our excellent partnership with FIG, building on the work of the last 17 years to develop and improve the ferry and coastal shipping services in line with future customer needs”.
