Launch of Trauma Risk Management (TRiM)

Today, 7 April 2025, the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) officially launches its Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) policy for government employees.

Originating in the UK Armed Forces, TRiM is an evidence-based post-incident management process designed to support people who may experience psychological distress following exposure to one or more potentially traumatic events. It is widely documented that employees who have been adversely affected by traumatic events at work are likely to be less effective and less likely to continue in their employment unless provided with the appropriate support.

We are all conscious of the impact that traumatic events can have in a small community like the Falkland Islands. To ensure the wellbeing and resilience of our staff, it is important that FIG takes steps to ensure employees have appropriate support mechanisms in place.

TRiM is a non-medical support system based on the ‘active monitoring’ model and is implemented across a large number of public service agencies in the United Kingdom.

Following a significant emergency response, the TRiM process may be activated. This comprises a TRiM Incident Briefing (open to all FIG personnel involved in or affected by the event), followed by individual or group assessments where required. Signposting to professional wellbeing services is available throughout.

In September 2024, TRiM trainers from leading psychological health consultancy March on Stress visited the Islands to provide training to FIG employees. A total of 24 FIG officers were trained as TRiM Practitioners, with 17 undertaking a further two days of training to become TRiM Managers.

Both the training provided and the policy under which FIG’s TRiM-trained personnel will now operate are fully compliant with the traumatic stress management guidance published by the National Institute for Clinical Evidence.
