Community Views survey on equalities in the Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has committed to working with the community to advance equality and tackle the inequalities that exist in our society.
FIG wants to ensure government decision-making is informed by the lived experience of people from a diverse range of backgrounds across the Falkland Islands.
The ‘Community Views Survey on Equality and Discrimination in the Falkland Islands’ was launched on the 4th of September 2024 and ran until the 30th of October 2024. The purpose of the survey was:
- to provide data about equalities in the Falkland Islands
- to provide information to assist the development of policy and legislation
- to gauge public opinion and identify what is important for the people of the Falkland Islands
The survey report publishes the high-level findings of the survey responses. Key findings include:
- Approximately 10% of the adult population of the Falkland Islands completed the survey
- 81%of respondents believe discrimination happens in the Falkland Islands
- 52%of respondents feel they had been subjected to discrimination in the Falkland Islands
- 68%of respondents believe they have witnessed discrimination happening to someone else in the Falkland Islands
Several common themes featured throughout the survey responses:
- Strong support for protecting individuals and groups of people from discrimination in the Falkland Islands.
- Personal experiences and anecdotes linked to all forms of discrimination including racism and sexism.
- The need for careful consideration and a tailored approach ensuring that all groups are treated equitably whilst accommodating the unique context of the Falkland Islands.
The survey responses will feed into wider information gathering by the Equalities Team. This will help ensure recommendations on future solutions to inequalities are fit for purpose for the Falkland Islands.
