Falkland Islands Government Launches 2025/26 Household Expenditure Survey

The Falkland Islands Government is seeking households from Stanley and Camp to take part in the Household Expenditure Survey. The survey will start in October and last 12 months. Participating households who successfully complete the survey will receive £200 in local business vouchers and will be entered into a prize draw to win £5000 at the end of the survey.

Households taking part will be required to keep a record of all their household expenditure in October 2025, January 2026, April 2026 and July 2026. In addition, they will be required to keep records of all their recurring household bills and large expenditure items (over £300) from October 2025 to September 2026 inclusive.

Households will also be asked for a small amount of demographic information at the start of the survey. This data is required to ensure that the survey sample is representative of the population make up.

To ensure data confidentiality, a specific survey manager has been appointed. All applications to participate will only be processed and be accessible to the survey manager. Each participant will be assigned a specific code upon signing up, which will be used to link returns to demographic information. Upon receipt of returns, the survey manager will anonymise the expenditure data and only then submit for collation and processing.

Only the survey manager will have server access to the named returns. It is not possible to have a fully anonymised survey, as participation needs to be verified to be able to send out vouches and carry out the prize draw. However, by limiting access to data to one individual, FIG has sought to ensure that expenditure data is kept secure and confidential.

This survey will help build the new Retail Price Index basket of goods. The RPI basket of goods is a range of items and services whose prices are collected every quarter. Those prices are used to gather information on changes to the cost of living, which in turn is used to inform policies and budgetary decisions in government and the private sector alike.

By getting up-to-date information on what households spend their money on and in what proportions, we will ensure that the basket of goods remains current and gives an accurate picture of the price of goods and services in Stanley.

If you are interested in taking part in the survey, you can find out more information here and sign-up forms on https://www.falklands.gov.fk/policy/statistics/housing-expenditure-survey-2025-26. Participating households must sign up by September 26 2025.
